Skin & Fur Care

Monsoon Pet Care in Bangalore: Protecting Your Dog's Skin During the Rains

Bangalore gets two rainy spells: the southwest monsoon from roughly June to September, and northeast rains in October and November. For dogs, damp months mean skin trouble.

What the rains do to skin

  • Fungal infections thrive when fur stays damp, especially in skin folds, ears and paws.
  • Hot spots, red, moist, painful patches, can appear quickly when wet fur traps heat.
  • Ticks and fleas multiply in thick, wet vegetation.
  • The monsoon smell: bacteria and yeast grow in fur that never fully dries.
  • Paw problems: cracked pads and infections between the toes from walking on wet, dirty roads.

A simple monsoon routine

  1. Dry thoroughly after every walk. Towel, then a cool hair dryer if your dog tolerates it. Pay attention to armpits, belly, paws and ears.
  2. Wipe paws with a clean damp cloth and dry between the toes.
  3. Check ears weekly for redness, smell or discharge.
  4. Keep bedding dry and wash it more often.
  5. Do not over-bathe. Bathing more often in the rains can make things worse unless you dry completely.
  6. Stay on tick prevention.
  7. Brush regularly so the coat dries faster and you spot problems early.

Breeds that need extra care

Dogs with thick double coats (Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds), long coats (Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos) and deep skin folds (Pugs, Bulldogs) hold moisture longer.

Signs to act on

Redness, a sour or yeasty smell, hair loss in patches, constant licking of one area or a moist, red patch that spreads: these need attention before they get worse. See a vet if there is pain, swelling or broken skin.
