Dog Hair Fall in Bangalore: Causes and What Actually Works

Fur on the sofa, fur on your clothes, fur in the corners of every room. Shedding is one of the most common complaints we hear, especially from owners of Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies, German Shepherds and Shih Tzus.

Normal shedding

All dogs shed. Double-coated breeds shed their soft undercoat heavily, often more than once a year. Bangalore's mild climate and indoor lighting mean many dogs shed steadily all year rather than in two clear seasons.

Signs it is more than shedding

  • bald patches or thinning in one area
  • red, flaky or smelly skin under the hair loss
  • constant scratching or licking
  • broken hairs rather than whole hairs falling out
  • sudden heavy hair loss with weight change or tiredness

These point to a skin or health problem, such as infection, parasites, allergy, diet or hormones. Your vet should check them.

What actually reduces shedding

  1. Brush properly and often. For double coats, use an undercoat rake or de-shedding tool, not just a slicker brush. A few times a week, daily in heavy phases.
  2. Get the dead undercoat out. Most of the fur on your floor is undercoat that has already died. Removing it in one go makes a big difference.
  3. Feed a complete diet. Low-quality diets and poor fat intake show in the coat. Ask your vet about omega-3 supplements.
  4. Bathe sensibly. Too often strips oils; too rarely lets dead hair mat.
  5. Never shave a double-coated dog to stop shedding. It damages how the coat regulates temperature and can grow back patchy.
