This list is community-sourced, so vet every sitter yourself. A good sitter will welcome these questions — hesitation or dismissiveness is a red flag.

- Insist on a meet-and-greet first and watch how they interact with your pet
- Ask for references from recent clients and check reviews
- Do a short trial visit before a long booking
- Share a written pet profile: feeding, meds, vet number, behaviour cues
- Agree update frequency (daily photos/videos) upfront
- Keep your vet's contact and an emergency plan with the sitter

- How many years have you been sitting, and with which breeds/species?
- Are you comfortable giving medication if needed?
- What will you do in a medical emergency?
- How many visits per day, and how long is each?
- Can you handle my pet's specific temperament (anxious, reactive, senior)?
- What are your charges, and how do you take payment?
