Potty training is mostly about timing and patience. Most puppies learn within a few weeks to a few months.
The golden rule
Take your puppy to the toilet spot before they need to go, and reward them the moment they go there.
When to take them out
- as soon as they wake up
- within 10 to 15 minutes after eating or drinking
- after play
- before bed
- every one to two hours in between for young puppies
A rough guide: puppies can hold it for about as many hours as their age in months, plus one. A three-month-old may manage around three to four hours at most.
Step by step
- Pick one spot. Indoors (pads or a tray on a balcony) or a fixed spot outdoors.
- Go there on a leash and wait quietly. Use one cue word, like "toilet".
- Reward immediately when they go: a small treat and warm praise, right there.
- If nothing happens in five minutes, go back inside, watch closely, and try again in 10 to 15 minutes.
- Watch for signs: sniffing the floor, circling, suddenly walking away. Take them straight to the spot.
Pads, trays or outdoors?
In apartments, many Bangalore families start with pads or a balcony tray and move outdoors once vaccinations are complete. If you plan to go outdoors eventually, start moving the pad closer to the door, then outside.
Wait for your vet's go-ahead before taking your puppy to public areas used by other dogs (see the vaccination schedule).
Accidents
- Never punish or rub their nose in it. It teaches them to hide when they go.
- Interrupt calmly if you catch them mid-way and take them to the spot.
- Clean with an enzymatic cleaner. Ordinary cleaners leave a smell that brings them back.
At night
Limit water an hour before bed, take them out last thing, and once during the night for young puppies.
How long it takes
Most puppies get the idea in two to four weeks and are reliable by four to six months. Setbacks during teething, illness or a change in routine are normal.
