Puppy Vaccination Schedule in India — What, When, and Why It Matters

If you’ve just got a puppy in Bangalore, the vaccination schedule is one of the most important things to get right — and one of the most confusing. Different vets give slightly different timelines. Some essential vaccines for Indian conditions don’t show up on Western charts at all.

Here’s the complete, India-specific puppy vaccination schedule — what to vaccinate against, when, and why each one matters.

Why Vaccination Is Non-Negotiable in India

India has high rates of stray animals, mixed urban-rural environments, and tropical disease vectors. The diseases puppy vaccines protect against — Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, and Rabies — are not theoretical risks here. They circulate actively, and a single missed vaccination can be fatal.

Puppies are most at risk between 6 weeks and 16 weeks of age. The vaccination schedule is designed to bridge this window.

The Standard Indian Puppy Vaccination Schedule

6-8 Weeks: First Vaccination (DHPPi)

This is the first major vaccine, given when the puppy’s maternal antibodies start to decline:

  • D — Distemper (fatal viral disease, no cure)
  • H — Hepatitis
  • P — Parvovirus (highly contagious, often fatal in puppies)
  • Pi — Parainfluenza

Usually given as a combined shot called DHPPi or 4-in-1.

10-12 Weeks: Second Vaccination (DHPPi + Leptospirosis)

Booster of DHPPi plus the first Leptospirosis vaccine — important in India because Lepto is bacteria carried in water and soil, common in urban areas with strays and rodents.

14-16 Weeks: Third Vaccination + Rabies

Final DHPPi booster + Lepto booster + first Rabies vaccine. Rabies is mandatory in India and vaccinated puppies need 30+ days for full immunity.

Annual Boosters (from year 2 onwards)

  • DHPPi booster — annually
  • Leptospirosis booster — annually (twice yearly in high-risk areas)
  • Rabies booster — annually

Optional but Recommended Vaccines

Corona Virus Vaccine

Causes severe diarrhoea in puppies. Recommended in dense urban areas like Bangalore where puppy-to-puppy contact is high.

Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

Recommended if your dog will be boarded, attend daycare, frequent dog parks, or go to grooming centres.

Tick Fever Vaccine

Available in India but with mixed efficacy. For most Bangalore dogs, monthly tick prevention (spot-on or collar) is more reliable than the vaccine.

What to Expect During and After Vaccination

Before the Appointment

  • The puppy should be healthy — not vomiting, not lethargic, not running a fever
  • No deworming on the same day as vaccination
  • Carry the vaccination booklet from previous shots if any
  • Don’t feed a heavy meal right before the visit

After the Vaccination

Most puppies are fine. Some have mild reactions: slight lethargy for 12-24 hours, mild swelling at injection site, slight fever — all normal.

Call the vet immediately if there’s severe lethargy beyond 24 hours, vomiting or severe diarrhoea, facial swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing.

Common Mistakes Bangalore Pet Parents Make

1. Taking the Puppy Outside Too Early

Until 7-10 days after the third DHPPi shot, your puppy is not fully protected against Parvo and Distemper. Bangalore footpaths, parks, and any area with stray dog access are off-limits. This is the single most common — and most dangerous — mistake.

2. Skipping the Second or Third Booster

The single first shot does NOT provide full immunity. Skipping any of the three shots leaves the puppy vulnerable.

3. Mixing Brands Without Telling the Vet

If you change vets mid-schedule, share the previous vaccination record. Different brands have slightly different formulations.

4. Not Vaccinating Adopted Adult Dogs

If you’ve adopted an adult dog with unknown history, restart the vaccination cycle. Don’t assume previous shots count.

Costs in Bangalore

Vaccination costs vary by vet and brand. As a rough guide, the complete three-shot puppy series plus rabies typically costs ₹3,000-₹6,000 total. Annual boosters are ₹800-₹1,500 per visit. This is one of the lowest-cost, highest-impact investments you’ll make for your dog’s lifetime health.

The Vet Visit Itself

For an unvaccinated young puppy who can’t be exposed to public spaces, transport is something to think about. Mylopaws Travel handles vet visits for puppies — clean vehicles, drivers comfortable with carriers, minimal exposure between your home and the clinic.
