One of the most common misconceptions among Bangalore pet parents is that ticks are a monsoon-only problem. In reality, Bangalore’s climate creates conditions for ticks almost year-round — but there are two distinct windows when the risk is significantly higher, and knowing when they are can save your dog a lot of discomfort.
When Tick Activity Peaks in Bangalore
Peak 1: Post-Monsoon (September – November)
This is the highest-risk period. The monsoon rains have ended, leaving the city’s parks, footpaths, and residential gardens with lush, damp vegetation — exactly the environment ticks thrive in. Temperatures are still warm. Humidity remains high. Tick populations that built up during the rains are now actively seeking hosts.
September and October are consistently the months we see the most tick-related cases at Mylopaws Dermacare. If your dog has ever had a severe infestation, it was probably during this window.
Peak 2: Pre-Monsoon (March – May)
The second peak is less severe but significant. As temperatures rise and the first rains begin intermittently, tick activity increases again. This period catches many pet parents off guard because the risk feels like it belongs to the monsoon, not the months before it.
Lower Risk But Never Zero (December – February)
Bangalore’s winters are mild enough that tick activity doesn’t stop — it just slows. Dogs that spend time in parks or have contact with other animals remain at risk year-round. “It’s winter, so we’re safe” is a false assumption that leads to infestations.
The Bangalore Environments to Watch
Ticks don’t live on dogs — they live in vegetation and transfer when your dog brushes past. High-risk environments in Bangalore include:
- Cubbon Park, Lalbagh, and Bannerghatta Road area — high tick density due to dense vegetation
- Any grass area in residential layouts — especially after rain
- Areas near construction sites — displaced vegetation brings displaced ticks
- Contact with stray dogs — the fastest transfer route
- Wooded outstation areas — Coorg, Wayanad, Chikmagalur (off-peak tick risk becomes peak risk in forests)
Prevention: What Actually Works
Spot-On Treatments
Veterinary-prescribed spot-on treatments (Fiprofort Plus, Frontline) applied monthly are the most reliable prevention for dogs with regular outdoor exposure. Apply 48 hours before high-risk outdoor activity so the product is fully effective. Don’t bathe your dog for 48 hours after application.
Tick Collars
Seresto collars provide 8 months of protection and are particularly useful for dogs who are bathed frequently (water reduces the effectiveness of spot-on treatments faster). They’re a good complement, not a replacement, for spot-on treatment.
Post-Walk Checks
After every park visit during peak season, do a quick check — behind the ears, between the toes, around the collar, at the base of the tail. A tick caught within 24 hours of attachment carries significantly lower disease transmission risk than one that’s been feeding for 48+ hours.
Professional Tick Elimination Therapy
If your dog already has ticks, a shampoo bath at home is rarely sufficient. Our Complete Tick & Flea Elimination Therapy at Mylopaws Dermacare treats both the active infestation and the skin environment — reducing the likelihood of reinfestation and treating any secondary skin irritation the ticks have caused.
Post-Outstation Reset
If your dog has been on a trip to Coorg, Wayanad, or any forested area, we strongly recommend a post-trip therapy session regardless of whether you’ve spotted ticks. Forest ticks are often different species, harder to spot, and carry higher disease risk than urban Bangalore ticks.
