A little fur on the sofa is normal. Fur on every surface, thinning patches, and a dog that won’t stop scratching at their own coat — that’s something else entirely.
Hair fall in dogs is one of the most common things Bangalore pet parents bring to us at Mylopaws Dermacare. And the tricky part is that it has many causes — which means the solution isn’t the same for every dog.
First: Is the Shedding Normal or Not?
Some shedding is completely normal. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies — these breeds shed heavily, especially during seasonal transitions. If your dog is shedding but the coat looks full and healthy, that’s usually not a problem.
What’s not normal:
- Patchy or uneven hair loss (bald spots)
- Shedding that’s significantly heavier than usual for your breed
- Fur that breaks easily or comes out in clumps
- Skin that looks red, flaky, or irritated where fur is thinning
- Scratching, biting, or rubbing that seems to accompany the shedding
If any of the above describe what you’re seeing, keep reading.
The Main Causes of Abnormal Hair Fall in Bangalore Dogs
1. Parasites — Ticks, Fleas, and Mites
Tick and flea infestations are the leading cause of abnormal hair loss in Bangalore dogs. The constant scratching damages the hair follicles over time, leading to thinning and bald patches. Mange (caused by mites) is another culprit — it starts with hair loss around the eyes, muzzle, and ears, and spreads quickly if untreated.
2. Fungal and Bacterial Skin Infections
Ringworm (which is actually a fungus, not a worm) causes circular patches of hair loss and is highly contagious — both to other pets and to humans. Bacterial infections like pyoderma can also cause significant fur loss, often with a bad smell and visible skin irritation.
Bangalore’s humidity makes both of these conditions more common than in drier cities.
3. Nutritional Deficiency
A diet lacking in the right proteins, omega fatty acids, and micronutrients will show up in the coat first. Dull, dry fur that sheds excessively is often a sign that something is off nutritionally. This is particularly common in dogs fed only one type of food for extended periods.
4. Hormonal Imbalances
Hypothyroidism and Cushing’s disease are two hormonal conditions that commonly cause hair loss in dogs. The shedding tends to be symmetrical (equal on both sides), and the skin often looks thickened or darkened. These need a vet diagnosis and aren’t something a grooming treatment alone can fix.
5. Stress and Anxiety
Dogs can lose fur from chronic stress — changes in the home, new pets, separation anxiety, or traumatic experiences. If you’ve ruled out physical causes, stress is worth considering.
What Doesn’t Work (and Why People Keep Trying It)
The standard response to hair fall is often: more brushing, a different shampoo, or a new supplement. These can help with normal shedding. But for abnormal hair loss, they’re addressing the symptom, not the cause.
A dog with a fungal infection won’t stop losing fur from brushing alone. A dog with a tick infestation needs antiparasitic treatment, not just a detangling shampoo. The right intervention depends entirely on the root cause.
The Mylopaws Dermacare Approach to Hair Fall
At Mylopaws Dermacare Centre in HSR Layout, we first look at what’s actually going on with the skin before recommending any treatment. Fur problems start at the skin level — and that’s where we focus.
Our Hair Fall Control & De-Shed Therapy is designed for dogs with heavy or abnormal shedding — using a combination of deep nourishment, follicle-strengthening products, and a thorough removal of the dead undercoat. It’s particularly effective for breeds like Labradors, German Shepherds, Huskies, and Golden Retrievers.
For dogs with thinning fur and visible skin issues, our Fur Revival & Shine Therapy targets both the fur and the skin underneath — restoring coat health from the root.
When to See a Vet vs. When to Come to Us
Come to us first if the hair fall is accompanied by scratching, a bad smell, visible skin changes, or if you suspect ticks or fleas. Most cases of abnormal hair fall in Bangalore have a dermacare solution.
See a vet if the hair loss is symmetrical, if your dog seems unwell or lethargic, or if the hair fall doesn’t improve after proper skin treatment — these signs suggest a hormonal or systemic cause that needs a medical diagnosis.
Talk to Us on WhatsApp
Not sure what you’re dealing with? Send Vijay a photo of your dog’s coat on WhatsApp and he’ll help you figure out the right approach — whether that’s a therapy session with us or a referral to a vet for further investigation.
